On Sunday 5 October, we hosted our first Spring Crafty DeStash Market!
The DeStash Market was held in the warehouse just outside Bombed Yarns studio. There was a buzz in the air before we even opened the doors! By the time we did, a line had formed down the street! Hundreds of crafters, makers, fibre artists, and curious browsers came! It proved once again, what a vibrant and generous community we have here in Hobart.
The Hobart crafting scene really is something special. It is full of people who share their supplies, knowledge, encouragement, and kindness. Every stall was a treasure trove of colour, texture and future exciting projects. Throughout the warehouse we could hear laughter, curious voices, and that familiar "I've always wanted to try that!" excitement!
The Inspiration Behind the DeStash Craft Market?

The idea of this market came about when I was sorting through my own stash! What do I do with these once beloved skeins of yarn, fabrics, stamps, tools etc. which I no longer use or are not my colour preferences anymore? I could have sold them online, or donated them to an op shop, but they still had value. What if the op shop did not know this or they sat undiscovered, collecting dust? Enter: the DeStash Market idea! I figured if I was seeking an opportunity to de-stash surely others are as well! What if I rallied our community to de-stash so others could come and enjoy! Oh my gosh we were inundated with interest!
Why did the DeStash Craft Market Resonate?
We had hundreds of people visit the market. We were honestly blown away by the response we received, both in the lead up and on the day! It was more than we could have imagined! We think there are a few reasons for that...
Finding Crafty Treasures at Fabulous Prices
This is a big one: shopping second hand is more affordable. The stall holders at this market take their crafting very seriously and have cared for their stashes very well. So market go-ers knew they would be getting high quality items for much less than their original price. Hobbies like crafting bring us so much joy and light to our lives but it's not always affordable. The DeStash Market makes these items accessible to a broader range of people but also offers anyone an opportunity to discover really special pieces!
Giving Items A Second Life
The spirit of de-stashing runs deeper than simply clearing out the craft cupboard. It’s about giving beautiful materials which have value, another life. Keeping them out of landfill and celebrating the potential of being reloved and created with. Shopping second hand is a small but meaningful way to reduce waste, consumption and support a circular sustainable craft economy.
Feeling Inspired by Fellow Makers
There’s something wonderfully connective about finding a skein of yarn, a bundle of fabric, or a handful of beads that someone else once loved enough to take home. You feel the same spark they felt and feel the excitement of that potential project.
A Chance to Come Together
And finally, we think much of the success of this market comes down to the Bombed Yarns community. Our customers and friends love coming together and they’re brilliant at spreading the word! Every month, our Stitch n Yarn gatherings bring people together to knit, crochet, embroider, and create side by side. We share projects, swap tips and troubleshoot when something’s gone a bit wonky. It’s a beautiful, welcoming group that thrives on connection. The DeStash Market felt like a natural extension of that spirit. Which is why at our next market, we’re planning to include even more opportunities for social crafting. Watch this space!
DeStashing into the Future
Of course, by mid-morning we realised that “DeStash Market” might not have been the most accurate name... If we are honest, there was a whole lot of re-stashing going on! Although, we prefer to think of it as responsible stocking… with purpose, inspiration, and plenty of crafty joy.
To everyone who came along, set up a stall, or simply wandered through with a coffee and a smile: thank you. You made our first Spring Crafty DeStash Market an amazing success!
We will be running another DeStash Market! Keep your eyes peeled before Autumn for expressions of interest! We can't wait to see you (and your stashes) there!
